Compounded medication
A familiar ingredient name does not make two medicines interchangeable. Learn how FDA approval, preparation and instructions differ, then ask the prescriber and pharmacist to identify the exact product being offered.
The difference
An FDA-approved medicine has been reviewed for safety, effectiveness and quality before marketing. A compounded medicine has not undergone that approval process. Compounding can meet an individual medical need when an approved drug cannot, but it is not the same as an FDA-approved generic. The weight loss medication overview helps distinguish the products whose names often appear together in advertising.
Ask the provider to state whether the prescription is for a manufacturer’s approved product or a preparation from a compounder. The Wegovy medication guide describes a branded semaglutide product; its approval does not extend to another preparation simply because semaglutide appears on the label. Evidence from a manufacturer’s clinical trial also does not establish equivalent outcomes for a compounded version.
FDA advises using compounded drugs only when a patient’s medical needs cannot be met by an approved drug. Ask what specific need the proposed preparation addresses and how the prescriber reached that decision. The GLP-1 medication guide explains medication mechanisms, but a shared mechanism cannot answer questions about manufacturing quality, approval or suitability. A lower price or convenient delivery offer alone does not establish a medical need or equivalence.
Before you accept
A named, licensed compounding pharmacy you can look up. A provider unwilling to tell you is answering the question.
Potency and sterility testing on each batch, with documentation available. Ask to see it rather than take it on trust.
Semaglutide alone, or combined with something else. Additives change the risk picture and should be disclosed plainly.
The product matters less than whether a clinician is reviewing your dose, your side effects and your history.
Cost
Request the dispensing pharmacy’s name, product ingredients, concentration, directions and storage requirements. For an injection, have the pharmacist explain the prescribed amount and demonstrate the correct device or syringe markings. Milligrams, milliliters and syringe units describe different things; do not reuse a conversion from an old vial or an online chart. Our medication dosing guide explains why product-specific instructions matter. Contact the pharmacy before using a product if its label is unclear, its packaging is damaged or its appearance differs unexpectedly from what was prescribed.
Compounding rules include conditions on making copies of commercially available drugs; neither a prescription nor an added ingredient automatically resolves every requirement. Ask the prescriber and pharmacy to explain the basis for the proposed preparation under current rules. The weight loss medication cost guide helps you record a quote, while the GLP-1 side effects overview introduces safety questions. This information site does not certify pharmacies or recommend a compounded product. Obtain an individualized clinical and pharmacy explanation before treating advertising language as confirmation of quality or suitability.

Common questions
The product, preparation and directions all matter when reviewing an offer.
Got a straight comparison rather than a sales pitch for whichever one they made more on.
Went with the approved product after understanding the difference. Cost more, and I was fine with that.
They told me exactly which pharmacy and showed me the batch testing without me having to push.
Moved from one to the other with the dose handled properly rather than guessed at.
