BMI thresholds
BMI can help frame a weight-management assessment, but it cannot select a medicine for you. Las Vegas readers can use this guide to understand common adult criteria, the limits of the calculation and the questions that a clinician or insurer may need to answer.
The numbers
Body mass index relates weight to height. Common criteria for considering weight-management medication in adults include a BMI of at least 30, or at least 27 with a weight-related health problem. The weight-related health conditions guide explains why a diagnosis can matter in the second group. These numbers support a clinical discussion rather than establish a prescription by themselves.
It helps to separate BMI categories from treatment criteria. The adult overweight category begins at 25, which is a different number from the commonly used medication criterion of 27 with a related condition. Current product labels also differ in their wording and approved uses. Our weight loss medication eligibility guide explains how an assessment connects those details to the person considering treatment.
Use accurate measurements and retain the dates of earlier measurements when discussing previous treatment. A single value cannot explain your weight history or establish insurance benefits. Check the proposed product and reason for prescribing it against your plan's weight loss coverage requirements. Ask which starting measurements and supporting records the plan needs before treating a familiar cutoff as its approval rule.
Working it out
Height without shoes, weight first thing. Small errors in height affect the result more than people expect, because it is squared.
Weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared. Any calculator will do it, and the number is the same everywhere.
If you land between 27 and 30, whether you have a documented weight-related condition is the deciding factor.
A clinician checks the figure against your records, because self-reported height and weight drift.
Its limits
BMI does not distinguish fat from muscle or bone, and it does not show where body fat is carried. People with the same BMI can therefore have different findings during a health assessment. A clinician may consider waist measurement, examination, blood pressure and relevant laboratory results alongside the calculation. The medical weight loss assessment guide explains the broader review. Questions about strength or lean tissue also belong in the conversation; the protein and muscle loss guide introduces that topic.
The goal is to understand what the measurement contributes and what it leaves unanswered. Tell the clinician about recent weight changes, your activity, existing treatment and symptoms that concern you. Ask how those details affect the proposed plan and what progress would be monitored beyond the scale. A personalized weight loss plan should explain the reasoning for its recommendations. An additional scan or test is useful only when it addresses a clinical question; a BMI result alone does not establish a need for a particular paid testing package. Ask which findings would change the recommendation.

Straightforward. Number was above the line, the conversation moved on to my history rather than dwelling on it.
Was sent for a sleep study before anything was decided. Turned out I did have apnea, which changed everything.
My height was out by three centimetres from what I had been telling people. Small change, noticeable difference in the number.
First time anyone admitted BMI is a blunt tool and told me what else they were looking at.

The number on its own rarely settles it. The free check looks at your BMI alongside the conditions and medications that actually decide the answer.
